The House on Mango Street
The first book we read this year was The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. This book is about a young girl named Esperanza. Throughout the book Esperanza learns how to escape Mango Street by watching all the women around her suffer from being held down by a man. Esperanza learns that she does not want a man to come and save her from Mango Street, she wants to escape on her own. When the book comes to an end Esperanza has fully matured and has escaped Mango Street. Overall I think that the book The House On Mango Street is a very thoughtful and well written book. I think that all of the characters were very well developed throughout the book. I would definitely recommend this book.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian
The Art Of Racing In The Rain |
The first book we read on our own in humanities class was The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. This book is about a young Indian boy named Junior who lives on a reservation. He decides to move from the reservation school to a white school off of the reservation. He makes new friends and learns many new things about friendship and fitting in. By the end of the book he mends his friendship with his reservation friends and he learns to deal with many different emotions. I would not recommend this book to someone because I think that the plot is not very strong and I think that the characters could be a little more explained.
Recently in class we read the book The Art Of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein. This book is written from the perspective of a dog named Enzo. Throughout the book Enzo explains how he sees his owners life. He watches all the struggles and successes his owner goes through. The reader sees how each character changes throughout the book from a very different perspective. I would definitely recommend this book. Overall it is a great story and although it is sad it still brings warmth to your heart.
