Over externship I probably learned the most about pottery that I ever will in my entire life. It was a lot of fun for me. This internship was significantly better than my Junior year. The experience was really good and will benefit me in the future when I have to work an hands on hard working job like that. I also have a new found love for Pottery.
I am grateful for all of my many mentors at the Hot Spot. Lexi Allie and Jaime. All three of them were super nice to us and we created some really good relationships with them. They taught us a lot and we all felt very comfortable talking to them. All three of them were great bu the person who I connected with the most would have to be Allie. She acted like we were one of her friends and not just some lame inters. I am really grateful for her and her laid back personality. Dear Lexi Thank you so much for all that you do at the Hot Spot I know that you are very busy and it can sometimes be hard to take on so many interns at a times but you did it I am super grateful. I hope that everything goes well for you in the future and you continue to do crazy fun things. Love Renee Pros
Laid back: The Hot Spot allowed me to not be super stressed out because of the calm environment. Customer Connection: You get to interact with customers and even help them paint their art with them. Make your own rules: Creative: My aha moment at the Hot Spot would have to that anyone can have creativity. When I got there I was very nervous that they were going to expect me to be super creative and create something beautiful. In my head I was thinking that I sucked at panting and anything I created wouldn't be a good idea or look really bad. I thought I wasn't artistic or creative. When our mentor told us that we had paint some bowls for the studio I was really nervous about it. But after I was done painting it and it came out of the kin it looked really good and confidence in myself and my artwork boosted. I realized that anyone can have creativity if they really think hard and work toward it.
Being comfortable and able to talk to customers is a skill that high tech high has taught me in the past. After doing many different projects and having to present them infant of strangers has really helped me be more comfortable about it. When I got to the Hot Spot I had no problem talking to and helping the customers.
At the Hot Spot there are many tasks that an employee has to do. Although they usually work alone so it is hard for them to finish all of the tasks before they get off of work. With the help of kimi Hannah and myself. WE were able to accomplish the tasks in a short amount of time. We cleaned tables and mixed paints together. Then we made wax and candles. We organized shelves and restocked the entire store which actually took us almost an entire day to do. But when we all worked together we were able to make their store look better than ever in a short amount of time.
Some challenges that I have encountered while working at the Hot Spot, is keeping up and being able to know how to do everything in the store. Usually only one person works at a time so if customers come in wanting to make a candle, pottery, or make a garden. You have to know everything about each project and be able to teach customers what to do. I have many mentors, but they are help me out when I don't know how to answer a question and teach me how to run the store as if I was a normal employee.
For my Externship experience I will be interning at The Hot Spot in liberty station. I am Interning with my friends Kimi and Hannah. The Hot Spot is a store where you can paint ceramics, make candles, or create potters for succulents and flowers. I am super excited to learn all about glazing ceramics and using the kiln. The employees are super nice and teach us how to do everything they do in the store. I am a little nervous about using the kiln because it is so hot and not following the specific process of working with it could mess up a customers art work.
Today I actually got to learn how to make a candle and package them for the customer. We were allowed to first assemble our own candles then we took them to the back and melted them down and added our own toppings like glitter and different shaped wax pieces. I am excited for tomorrow because one of our mentors Allie is going to teach us how to glaze ceramics for the kiln. |
